Patricia Treib

Patricia Treib was born in 1979 in Saginaw, Michigan, and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Treib's paintings are composed around sensuous details, absences, and shifts in perspective, drawing on references from Old Master frescoes to the contours of everyday objects, with her true subject being the process of looking itself, discovering new relationships between forms while dismantling what is merely recognizable.

Treib received a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2020) and an Artadia Award (2017), and has participated in residencies including ARCH, Athens (2021); the American Academy in Rome (2017); Dora Maar House, Ménerbes (2014); and the MacDowell Colony (2013). She was a Visiting Artist at institutions including Columbia University, Rutgers, Rhode Island School of Design, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and presented at "Artists Present at Noon" at The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2011).

Selected group exhibitions include AIR, curated by Amy Sillman, Monya Rowe Gallery, New York (2006); The Manhattan Project, curated by Jeffrey Uslip, Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Miami (2006); The General's Jamboree, Guild & Greyshkul, New York (2005); and Past Perfect, Kantor Gallery, New York (2004).

Treib received an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University (2006) and a BFA in Painting/Drawing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2001). Her work is held in public collections including the Aïshti Foundation, Beirut; Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville; the RISD Museum, Providence; TBA21, Vienna; The Morgan Library, New York; and the Zabludowicz Collection, London. Her work has been written about in Artforum, The New Yorker, Art in America, The New York Times, and BOMB Magazine, and her monograph, published in 2020 by Kate MacGarry, Bureau, and Galerie Nordenhake, features an essay by Joanna Fiduccia and an interview conducted by Ben Lerner.
